Keep Furniture Off the Walls

If the room you’re furnishing is super tight, then placing your furniture against the walls may be your only option. Otherwise, leave space between the walls and your furniture, which can actually make the room feel more spacious. And if you have a larger space to play with, float the furniture even farther away from the walls to create a conversation area in the centre of the room, which leads us to our next point.

Create a Conversation Area

A living room should be a space where people can congregate to hang out with each other and chat, and creating a conversation area can be the perfect way to foster that arrangement. To do this, position your furniture to face each other so that they’re near enough for people to easily converse without having to lean in or twist their necks. If you’re dealing with a very large room, then you may be able to create more than one conversation area.

Use an Appropriately-Sized Area Rug

An area rug can tie a room together, but not only is the position of the rug important, so is its size. When you use an area rug, make sure it’s large enough so that all furniture within the arrangement is on top of it to some degree.

Take Traffic Flow Into Consideration

You don’t want to be blocked by furniture when you’re trying to maneuver around the room, so try to allow for at least a couple of feet between sofas, chairs, and coffee tables. This will ensure an unobstructed path for people to walk around the room with no difficulty.

Ensure Proper Balance With Your Furniture Arrangement

Keeping balance in your room is an essential part of furnishing and decorating. To make sure you maintain some balance, take the size and position of pieces into consideration. For instance, don’t group all big or small pieces on one side of the room. Instead, add some variety with your shapes and sizes throughout the space.

Pick a Focal Point

A focal point in a room might be obvious, such as a fireplace. But other times, you might have to create one, which can be done with things like a television or media unit. Whatever you’ve chosen as your focal point, arrange your furniture around it.
