I was recently asked to do a consultation for a client who was selling their home and planning to build a new home for themselves. They loved their current home but were opting to move in order to build a home utilizing as many “green” or sustainable building materials as they could. Building materials typically considered to be ‘green’ include: rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw, lumber from forests certified to be sustainably managed, recycled metal, recycled stone, and other products that are recyclable, renewable, non-toxic and reusable, some examples are : Glass, clay, vermiculite, flax linen, sisal, sea grass, cork, coconut, calcium sand stone, and certain forms of concrete.
When possible, building materials should be manufactured locally to minimize the energy used to transport materials to the site.
Before your next big renovation project, rather than automatically heading straight to the isles of your local big box store why not do some research and consider utilizing some greener alternatives!
