5 Ways to Create a Cozy Attic Bedroom

Whether your older child needs his or her own space, or you’re looking to add a guest room, the attic can be the perfect place. But considering the typically tightness of these rooms, it can be a real challenge to furnish and decorate it without it looking cramped and uncomfortable.
Consider these tips when furnishing and decorating an attic bedroom in your Toronto home.
Carefully Consider Your Furniture Arrangement
Let’s face it. You’re most likely dealing with a limited number of square feet (or shall we say inches?) when decorating and furnishing an attic space. That’s why it’s crucial that you carefully consider exactly how you’ll be arranging the pieces in this area. Keep in mind space to stand and sit around furniture pieces, such as sofas and desks. Make sure that the bed is placed somewhere where you can comfortably and easily get in and out of it.
Make Smart Use of Sloped Ceilings
Don’t let the presence of a sloped ceiling prevent you from coming up with some great decor and furniture arrangement ideas. Use this awkward space for desks, window seats, built-in shelving units, and reading nooks, as the activities required for these spaces don’t need much ceiling height.
Infuse the Space With Two-Tone Paint
When you’re dealing with a smallish attic space, painting can be a tricky thing. That’s because the walls are typically on the short side, and ceiling space is usually larger compared to most other rooms in a home. A two-tone paint job will help create a cozy feeling when the walls are painted a different colour than the ceiling.
Forget About Overhead Lighting
Rather than installing a central light fixture or recessed lighting, go for wall sconces or table/floor lamps instead. These non-ceiling light fixtures and placements will help create what’s known as “uplighting,” and can do wonders to highlight a unique and dramatic roof slope.
Keep it Simple
You don’t necessarily need all the bells and whistles when it comes to furnishing a bedroom, such as nightstands, armoires, and so on. When you’re talking about a cramped space, you don’t want to overcrowd it by unnecessarily placing more pieces in it than necessary. This will only make the room feel closed in and cluttered. Keep it simple. And if that means only having a bed, so be it.
