4 Household Handyman Projects to Tackle This Fall

October 8, 2018

With the fall season now in full swing, now might be a great time to make a few repairs and tackle a few projects that have been on your to-do list all summer (or maybe even all year!). Fall is a great time to tackle these chores before the cold weather of the winter approaches.

Whether you’re just updating your home for your own comfort and enjoyment or are considering selling some time soon, you might want to undertake any one of the following projects this fall.

handyman projects1. Clean Out the Gutters

The fall is one of the most notorious times for gutters to become filled with debris, especially falling leaves from overhanging trees. Once your gutters are filled with debris, they become unable to properly allow rainwater to collect and be guided away from your home. This puts your home in danger of being negatively impacted by pooling water, which is certainly not a good thing.

Take some time to clean out your gutters before the winter sets in. If water is allowed to pool in the gutters, it will freeze under cold temperatures and really create a blockage problem. Make sure you keep on top of your gutters before the freezing temperatures arrive.

2. Change the Filter on Your Furnace

Your furnace is made up of a number of important components, including the filter. If the filter is clogged, dirty, or worn down, the heat exchanger could become overheated and turn off sooner than you’d want it to. That’s why it’s important to change your furnace filter before winter sets in. You might even want to change it every so often throughout the winter as well if needed.

3. Weather Strip Doors and Windows

We’ve already been feeling some cooler weather in Toronto, but we haven’t seen anything yet. With the harsh temperatures of the winter upon us, now’s the time to weather strip your doors and windows to prevent any cold air from coming in and warm air from escaping.

4. Clean Out Your Dryer Vent

House fires can be caused by any number of things, but did you know that clogged dryer vents are one of them? Make sure to take the time to keep your dryer vents clear to avoid making your home vulnerable to a fire. With fall typically comes drier air, which can create an environment that may be conducive to fires. Make sure to thoroughly clean out your dryer vent on a regular basis.
